Introduction to Simulation-based Learning Experiences

This course explores the recent history of SLE and examines current trends. Select learning theory and methods used to create SLE will be presented. The International Nursing Association for Simulation Clinical and Learning (INASCL) Standards of Best Practice© will be introduced as the gold standard for developing and implementing SLE. The Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) certification requirements and process will be explored. The course will explore available resources for further professional development, obtaining scenarios and debriefing tools. Recent Oregon State Board of Nursing (OSBN) regulatory issues related to simulation will be discussed. This course is designed for novice to competent simulation educators and is a

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe learning and simulation theory used for creating SLE.
  • Discuss the application of INASCL Standards when designing, facilitating, and evaluating SLE.
  • Critique a minimum of three resources available to enhance the design and implementation of SLE.
  • Describe the implications of OSBN regulatory changes for pre-licensure simulation programs.
  • Discuss the criteria and process for obtaining SSH certification as a healthcare simulation educator.
  • Develop a personal professional development plan integrating SLE resources.
