Introduction to Assessment/Evaluation of Simulation-Based Education

This course presents fundamental educational principles used to assess satisfaction, learning and competency in simulation-based education (SBE). Participants will review a variety of commonly used instruments used in SBE and will design their own formative assessment tool and method to use in the simulation-based learning environment. The regulations published by the Oregon State Board of Nursing (OSBN) will be addressed and resources for accessing commonly used instruments will be explored.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Discuss the administrative rules published by the Oregon State Board of Nursing addressing requirements for evaluating simulation-based education (SBE).
  2. Compare the similarities and differences between formative, summative and high-stakes assessment.
  3. Design a formative assessment tool/method to use for promoting learning during a simulation-based learning experience.
  4. Identify available resources for accessing instruments commonly used to assess student satisfaction and facilitatory effectiveness in SBE.
